I had always heard that ten-foot was considered the minimum size dish
for 1.2-10GHz and 100w considered minimum for CW. But since ability
to produce power diminished with frequency, 25-50w was OK on 5760 or
10368. I guess that is changing of late.
When we moved into our current home in 2006, I debated whether to
move only the 8-foot dish and leave behind the 16-foot (in parts in
the barn). I decided to move both and as it turns out the 8-foot
will not be put into service. It is for sale, pick-up in Alaska.
One thing I have learned running QRP on 2m & 70cm is that having an
antenna large enough to hear small stations is maybe more
important. Many 1-2 yagi stations on 2m run QRO but cannot hear
other small stations due to antenna size. I have run my 4-yagi
nearly from the beginning on 2m-eme and that HAS made the difference
making a QSO. Though I would not chose to go back to running 150w on
2m I could hold my own with 1-2 yagi stations running 600w+. This is
using JT-65, of course. 4-yagi + 600w is still the CW minimum for 2m.
So I am glad I went with the 4.9m (16-foot) dish, though I cannot
claim to be QRV 1296, yet. Having 4.5 dB more gain comes in handy
when copying small stations. It will make my 60w louder, too.

I think it depends on how you define success. You can
use VK3UM's program
to look at different scenarios of dish size and power and echoes vs big QRO
stations to work. My first 12 QSOs in 1982? were with a 7.5 ft dish
...first QSO with 75 W in the shack! later with more power and a 12 ft dish.
10 ft and 100 W should give you echoes if you do everything right

Against my better(?) judgement and advice Don, W7UPF, is using an ex
TVRO 10 foot mesh dish with near 200 W from a SSPA at the
feed. He's been quite successful. I think that less than that is
wishfull thinking, for CW operation.
