Hello EMErs....
All of this JT65 vs Q65 discussion raised a question...seems like the Delta
44 is the preferred sound card but win 10 compatibility is an issue.
I'm wondering if anyone has done any testing on external audio interfaces
(USB interconnect) and what have you found to be the best for EME use
particularly JT65B. I do not use MAP 65 so just the SSB bandwidth is all I
require.

Hi Fred.
If you are not using an SDR receiver but rather using a normal rig with SSB
bandwidth then any sound card suitable for music is more than good enough
to feed WSJTX.

I'm (temporally) using the internal soundcard (Realtek) in my Dell i5
win10 computer.
That was interfaced to my K3 spkr and line-in ckts for running Q65A
6m-eme with wsjt-x. 6m antenna array being H-pol-only, MAP65 is not needed.
Eventually (when I can get the driver installed), I will be using a
UADC4 which has four audio input ports and USB I/F to the computer. I
will feed the UADC4 with two I-Q baseband RF from two LP-Pan (SDR) that
are fed by the K3 dual-Rx IF. I expect the UADC4 to work better than
typical soundcards.
Previously I used a Delta44 in place of the UADC4 for 2m adaptive pol Rx.

Reading all these... is there any advantage to using a sound card vs the
USB interface on an IC-9700? Is the radios internal data conversion
noisier?

Of course, that kind of interfacing extends to any other radio exposing

To get around the sound card issue one can use the Afedri 822VHFX2 2 channel SDR for 6
meters to 23 cM MAP65 by using Linrad on current OS versions including Windows 11. It
needs no sound card. $400 is the current price.
Conrad knows far more than I do about it but it worked fine for me using the Afedri-net
setup under Windows 10. With MAP65 3.0 I was pleased with the deeper decodes.

Hi All.
There seems to be some confusion here so I will repeat myself.

The way Fred explained it, he is using a rig in SSB bandwidth to feed
speaker audio from his rig to a sound card in a computer driving WSJTX.
In this case you can use the cheapest sound card you can lay your hands on
or the most expensive, most capable sound card you can find and there is NO
DIFFERENCE at all. I have even decoded signals successfully using speaker
audio with a microphone on the computer for input.
For SDR receivers like the IQ+, it is a horse of a different color and that
is where I believe the confusion lies here. If an SDR drives the sound
card, you must have a very good dynamic range with reasonable noise figure.
It must have 96khz or more bandwidth if Map65 is to cover the whole digital
EME sub band on 2 meters. For an Xpol system you must have 4 channels in
the sound card (in phase) because the SDR will produce and I and a Q
channel for each of a vertical and a horizontal channel.
Fred is NOT using Map65. Don't sweat the sound card. Use what you have with
confidence that it is the best it can be.

I'm using a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 for my digimode stuff and very happy
with it. They are not the cheapest external soundcard, but they do the job
well. Having the external gain controls is very useful for me.

The scarlet sadly has notoriously bad drivers, put a -1dBFS signal into it and look at the
FFTs in Linrad or similar. You will see many dropped packets. It’s a shame because the
Focusrite are a serious contender in pro audio. The ADC is excellent, the mic pre amps
have low noise.
Do a google search for focusrite scarlett 2i2 bad drivers windows 10 you will soon see
that there are many problems.
Not recommended.
